— Chef José Andrés Episode Summary —
Who’s making dinner tonight? —
Do you know where your dinner is coming from? I bet there will be a grownup in the kitchen, getting it ready for you. Maybe siblings are helping too.
T likes to help us make food and we love having her help! What foods do you like to help your family cook?
It takes a lot of work to make food —
Some food is grown on farms – it has to be planted, taken care of, picked, cleaned, and sent to markets for people to buy.
Some food is made in factories, where people and machines combine ingredients to make something that we can eat.
And sometimes we eat in restaurants. But if the adult who usually makes diner is next to you, who is making the food? Chefs!
Chefs are amazing – they can make many types of food, and quickly.
A chef we really admire is José Andrés —
He is a grownup and a dad! He has cooked in and started many restaurants.
His restaurants are in the United States but he was born in Spain and learned to cook from his own parents. He often incorporates Spanish foods and flavors in the dishes he makes.
Chef Andrés has said that he thinks of himself as a culinary ambassador. An ambassador represents one place while visiting another. A culinary ambassador shares through food.
He has worked with a food team and space exploration company to send food into space! He developed a receipt to feed astronauts on a visit to the International Space Station. They made paella!
Chef Andrés created an organization named World Central Kitchen —
In 2010, there was a big earthquake in Haiti and a lot of people needed help. Chef Andres wanted to help, so he went to Haiti and cooked together with people who lived there. It helped him to understand just how important food. can be.
So he started World Central Kitchen. The organization sends chef and helpers right after an emergency happens. They work with the people who live there to make sure that people are fed.
World Central Kitchen can inspire us all to help others' in our lives through food. Consider bringing food to a family with a new baby or someone who’s sick, donating to a canned food drive, or sharing food that’s grown in your garden.
